Midweek Movie - Cloverfield

Filed under: Midweek Movie — Malcolm Owen @ 11:35 pm

Cloverfield Statue of LibertyI will readily admit that I have a liking for Lost and other epically strange programmes that stray from the norm. I will also admit to liking weird concept films (I’m still excited over the entire idea of Series 7: the Contenders, the film that’s a TV series that’s too hot for TV, where the contestants have to kill each other). I am also a sucker for watching films in almost completely empty cinemas.
The stars aligned when, last night, a group of friends said they were going to see the latest hypefest, Cloverfield.

I just had to go and see it…

“Midweek DVD” Now “Midweek Movie”, Do Not Panic

Filed under: Midweek Movie, Website News — Malcolm Owen @ 12:16 pm

As you might be aware, Midweek DVD has been a semi-regular feature of Blatantly Random, whereby I would talk about a random DVD for a few hundred words, usually telling you to watch it for reasons that most normal people won’t care about. Well, thanks to a recent cinema trip with some friends, and after having a mostly great time, I feel that I should be able to talk about cinema releases, not just DVDs.

Midweek DVD is now Midweek Movie. I can now talk about new films, not just old, obscure and obtuse films.

Thank you for reading.

Midweek DVD - Kung Fu Hustle

Filed under: Midweek Movie — Malcolm Owen @ 5:47 pm

Kung Fu Hustle is, oddly enough, a Kung Fu film with a vaguely typical Kung Fu storyline. The story of a street bum and a weird slum strangely full of martial art experts in hiding. Add in the local criminal underworld, and you have something that we’ve seen before.

However, it’s a Stephen Chow film…

Midweek DVD - Snakes On A Plane

Filed under: Midweek Movie — Malcolm Owen @ 12:41 pm

This got super-hyped on the internet, to the point that it could only exude coolness upon release. It didn’t do as well as people thought, primary because if you look at it, Snakes on a Plane is not really a good film. When the basic storyline is “FBI take witness from Hawaii to LA, but criminals put time-released snakes onto the plane to kill them, cue hijinks”, you might begin to worry a bit.

By the numbers it should be a decent action film, it had all the pieces you would expect from an action-drama-survival-horror film.
It had the build up before the plane, there was the introduction to most of the main characters that would survive the initial onslaught, it had passengers from every section of society that you can think of that would fly a plane in first class (The Paris Hilton Socialite Ripoff? Yep. The Suited English Businessman with High Stress Levels? Yes, although wearing a suit in Hawaii. The martial artist fighter? Dunno about that being normal…), you had the slow build-up to the release, the first battle, the defending, the attacking, the more defending, and so on. Yes, they tried everything, even getting Samuel L Jackson to star in it, but it didn’t stop it from being anything between mediocre and pathetic.

And yet… I like it…

Midweek DVD - Hot Fuzz

Filed under: Midweek Movie — Malcolm Owen @ 11:36 pm

Ok, I admit, I didn’t have too much hope for this film when I first heard about it. I thought that being the second film for the team behind Shaun of the Dead, they would have to live up to the standard their previous film had set, and that would be extremely difficult to do. I also thought that the genre of “Funny Cop Films with Action Bits” wasn’t a good area to be working in, given that the genre covers such wonders as the Police Academy series.

Cue me buying the DVD of Hot Fuzz

Midweek DVD - Team America: World Police

Filed under: Midweek Movie — Malcolm Owen @ 4:40 pm

Team America
There are very few films out there that can not only be viewed without thinking too hard about the content, but also be hugely entertaining by making you think. Yes, it’s a weird combination of thoughts, but that’s what sums up my view on Team America: World Police.
On the surface, it’s a Trey Parker and Matt Stone film, full of the usual things you would expect from the creators of South Park and Baseketball. Except this time, it’s neither live action, nor high quality animation. It’s puppets. Like watching Thunderbirds or Captain Scarlet, but on cocaine. (”Drugs are bad, mmkay”)

Midweek DVD - Kill Bill: Vol. 1

Filed under: Midweek Movie, Other — Malcolm Owen @ 10:11 am

Today is Valentine’s Day.

It’s a horrible day of the year, where people are forced into romancing other unwilling participants in the hope of an evening meal at an overpriced and overbooked restaurant, an enjoyable time at a club that’s in heavy romance mode, and some late night action in bed. All the single people will be persecuted by those in relationships, egged on by “Better Knowing” elder family members to find that special someone, just so they can take their “Singleton” mental label off you.
And if you’ve tried to do something romantic for someone you love but are not dating currently, and they ditch you for someone else, you will feel bitter that you failed to score. You will feel rejected, unhappy and vengeful.

Because we know full well that watching Four Weddings and a Funeral will push you over the edge, what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some gratuitous killing?

Midweek DVD - Dogma

Filed under: Midweek Movie, Other — Malcolm Owen @ 11:03 pm

Kevin Smith has made a bit of a name for himself, being the God-like figure behind the Askewniverse creations “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, “Mallrats” and that one about guys in a comic book store called “Clerks”. In my and my family’s estimation, the best work of the lot happens to be Dogma.

Dogma revolves around the whole concept of religious entities screwing up without realising what they are doing. A church decides, in order to get more people visiting during services, proclaims that anyone that walks through the doors would become free of sin and would guarantee themselves a place in Heaven….

Midweek DVD - Doom

Filed under: Gaming, Midweek Movie, Other — Malcolm Owen @ 10:30 pm

Doom

Doom is one of the biggest names in gaming. It’s been around for years, and has been fondly remembered by a crowd of geekish teenagers that completed the shareware and installed the Barney mod. Sadly, it suffers from the same thing that many other movies of games fall foul of too: Movie Adaptations of Games Are Rubbish. The only ones that manage to avoid the rule seem to be the Resident Evil films, but only because the whole Resident Evil thing is based on the horror film format in the first place.
