I find all of these classical books to be a complete yawnfest. Sure, I can read through a Harry Potter book easily so I’m not illiterate, but when it comes down to the literary heavyweights I just can’t deal with it. I have the whole lot of The Lord of the Rings here, yet I still can’t bring myself to get past the first 20 pages. If only there was some way for the classics to be redone…
Well, someone has done it! Seth Grahame-Smith has written (and by written I mean liberally adjusted the original texts to make it more entertaining) Pride and Prejudice with Zombies. A fantastic idea, especially since adding these supernatural beings to a boring classic somehow makes me want to read it. Does Mr Darcy get a hole in the head as he becomes a light snack?
The author’s editor originally came up with the idea, namely by lining up well known books next to a list of major things that can affect the work greatly. This makes me wonder how other texts could be livened up in this way. Oliver Twist with Robots anyone? Or maybe some War and Peace liberally sprinkled with vampires? How about The Sound of Music with Nazis… wait…
