Waiterless Restaurant Opens in Germany, Sommeliers Worried

Filed under: Other, Tech — Malcolm Owen @ 4:47 pm

So, you’re in Nuremberg looking for something to do. You feel hungry, but going to a normal restaurant with bossy waiting staff isn’t your cup of tea. Where could you possibly go?
How about somewhere without the aforementioned waiters? A self-service restaurant that isn’t a buffet such as ’s Baggers, where the food gets served by going down huge rails from the ceiling, straight to the table. You order from a screen at your table, and the food slides down ready for you to eat. The screen ordering also gives updates as to how long food and drinks will take to arrive, and payment is done by smartcards. It’s pretty nice to look at, slightly Steampunk-ish, but an elegant design for a not thought of much problem.

I have to wonder how long will it take for McDonalds to take advantage of this…

Chimp A-Pan + 5 Dogs * Cake / Stairs = Funny

Filed under: Japan, Video — Malcolm Owen @ 9:26 am

Chimp A-Pan is a well trained animal. It can ride a train, buy tickets, do sit-ups in a contest, all whilst pulling around a bulldog. Amazingly well trained. The chimp, that is. Not the dog.

This time, the challenge is to get to a cake shop and buy a package. But with 5 dogs this time. Hilarity ensues…

Midweek DVD - Snakes On A Plane

Filed under: Midweek Movie — Malcolm Owen @ 12:41 pm

This got super-hyped on the internet, to the point that it could only exude coolness upon release. It didn’t do as well as people thought, primary because if you look at it, Snakes on a Plane is not really a good film. When the basic storyline is “FBI take witness from Hawaii to LA, but criminals put time-released snakes onto the plane to kill them, cue hijinks”, you might begin to worry a bit.

By the numbers it should be a decent action film, it had all the pieces you would expect from an action-drama-survival-horror film.
It had the build up before the plane, there was the introduction to most of the main characters that would survive the initial onslaught, it had passengers from every section of society that you can think of that would fly a plane in first class (The Paris Hilton Socialite Ripoff? Yep. The Suited English Businessman with High Stress Levels? Yes, although wearing a suit in Hawaii. The martial artist fighter? Dunno about that being normal…), you had the slow build-up to the release, the first battle, the defending, the attacking, the more defending, and so on. Yes, they tried everything, even getting Samuel L Jackson to star in it, but it didn’t stop it from being anything between mediocre and pathetic.

And yet… I like it…

Feminist Writes Bad Things About Porn, Dethroner Rebuttal Rocks

Filed under: Internet — Malcolm Owen @ 9:55 pm

Naomi  Wolf (No, I have no idea whom either) wrote in “New York” Magazine something about blaming pornography for a downturn in, well, sex. Apparently we would all prefer to be furiously fapping away to something on screen instead of other real people. Cue Joel’s rebuttal over at Dethroner in the post “I’m Still Not Back, but Naomi Wolf Forced My Porn-Clawed Hand“. With a title like that, it just has to be good…

It rocks. Seriously. You should read it. Like, Now.
