Midweek DVD - Hot Fuzz

Ok, I admit, I didn’t have too much hope for this film when I first heard about it. I thought that being the second film for the team behind Shaun of the Dead, they would have to live up to the standard their previous film had set, and that would be extremely difficult to do. I also thought that the genre of “Funny Cop Films with Action Bits” wasn’t a good area to be working in, given that the genre covers such wonders as the Police Academy series.
Cue me buying the DVD of Hot Fuzz…
Hot Fuzz is the tale of an over-efficient city cop by the name of Nicholas Angel, whom has been promoted by higher police officers. This in itself isn’t out of the ordinary, except that he’s also being sent to a crime-free town far away from London, if only to stop Nicholas making the other cops look bad. Nicholas reluctantly packs up his peace lily, and heads off to Sandford.
When in Sandford, he gets paired up with Danny Butterman, a not exactly brilliant policeman who’s obsessed with action films and wants to do something high-octane as part of the job, and soon discovers a strangely high accident rate in the town. By the end of the film, as you’d probably guess, there’s tons of action. More than enough to keep the average action fan happy.
Now, compared to Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz keeps things going at a faster rate, despite the film being a colossal 2 hours. There’s a slight lull in the middle, but you could probably call it the Calm Before the Storm in this case. It’s an extremely funny film, and most of you lot whom loved Shaun would love this too. Heck, if you liked this, you’d love Shaun.
Next question. They’ve done a Romantic Comedy with Zombies. They’ve done the Action Comedy in the UK. What’s next?
