Google Street View – Some Highlights

By Malcolm Owen | Jun 1, 2007

As we all know, when Google launched Google Maps and Google Earth, the next few weeks then became filled by eagle eyed people finding random bits of joy, just by chance. Google launches Street View, and there’s no exception to the rule.

Laudon Tech has already compiled a long list of random yet wonderful things to look at, but here’s my current top picks from that list:
The Mystery Machine
Woman in Bikini
A Man “Boning Up” on Reading…
Old Lady on Tram staring into your Soul

The pictures are interesting, but people seem to be concerned about the privacy issues about having their images posted associated with this project.

I posted about what Google Maps Zoom Featuremight be called.

It definitely is a privacy issue, but I don’t really think it’s too much to worry about.
I mean, every day there’s a bunch of kids that walk past a road behind the house I live in. That road is high enough that they could possibly peer into my bedroom window whilst I’m asleep some mornings. What have I done to protect my privacy? I put some curtains up.
Granted, going out and about and suddenly having your picture taken by an automatic camera isn’t exactly on everyone’s list of things they actually want to do unwillingly, but with the amount of street surveillance where I am there’s practically no escape anyway. Indeed, the only real difference to me between the CCTV systems and what Google’s doing is the fact that Google has only a snapshot, rather than a live version of events.
Then again, if Google Maps had a live and highly zoomable satellite feed function like that of Under Siege 2, then everyone would be terrified. (Can’t wait for that to happen, topless garden sunbathers beware!)

Google’s own employees staged a mock fight when the Google Van passed their headquarters. Check it out here: Google Mock Street Fight. This shows Googlers (employees of Google) deliberately acknowledging the Google Van as it went by. Made me laugh, but also is it right to do this kind of thing?
