Put Your Xbox 360 Controller On Your PC

Xbox 360 Controller on PCI’ve been jealous of you console types for quite a while. It’s not that you have better games than we PC games have (FPS games are MEANT for the keyboard and mouse, damnit!), not the standardisation of hardware (at least with the PC if the game looks bad and you want to improve it, it’s feasible by changing part of the machine. Try doing that with your Xbox 360!), but the controllers.

Console joypads lead the way of other gaming interfaces. Containing the basic control systems you need to be able to do most tasks in gaming and bundled with the systems from the days of launch, they are designed to be as multi-genre as possible. A finely engineered conduit that translates your physical movements into virtual commands.
PC controllers have been quite, how we say, disappointing for the last few years, and it’s rare to ever see a controller that will work with both a console and a PC with little or no hassle. Microsoft, in their wisdom, decided that their Xbox 360 controllers should be compatible with both the X360 console and your standard Windows machine, instantly making one of the best PC joypads in a long time.

Here’s how to get it going…

Buy an Xbox Controller. This is pretty obvious, but you really should get one before proceeding. I’d suggest the wired controller, since getting the wireless one would just involve more work. You’re also probably going to be pretty damn near to the PC, so a wireless solution is pretty much overkill in this case.

Turn on Your PC. Another “Duh” instruction…

Download the Drivers. Microsoft have made them available HERE, unless they decide to move them, just to confuse you.

Install the drivers. It’s simple, really. You run the executable, and you see these nice screens. It’s all over in a couple of minutes.

Connect the Joypad to the PC. Else it won’t work. Obviously.

And that’s about it. You might have to go into the Game Controller bit in the Control Panel to calibrate it (It might be off center), but that’s all there is to it. A lot simpler than ordering a converter for a DualShock controller online and then strangling the resulting connectors.
