Midweek DVD - Dogma

Kevin Smith has made a bit of a name for himself, being the God-like figure behind the Askewniverse creations “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, “Mallrats” and that one about guys in a comic book store called “Clerks”. In my and my family’s estimation, the best work of the lot happens to be Dogma.
Dogma revolves around the whole concept of religious entities screwing up without realising what they are doing. A church decides, in order to get more people visiting during services, proclaims that anyone that walks through the doors would become free of sin and would guarantee themselves a place in Heaven….
However. 2 angels that were exiled from Heaven decide that it’s a great idea to get home that way. By doing so, they would prove God to be fallible, undo all existence, cats start sleeping in the same beds as dogs, and all that malarkey.
Bethany is the last hope for mankind to exist, and thanks to the Metatron (not the Transformer, the voice of God), is challenged to stop Loki and Batleby from ruining existence. Aided by Chris Rock playing a disciple, Jay and Silent Bob and a Muse, she must travel a great distance to save everyone.
Basically, the film questions the whole point of religious doctrine and the way it is taught. If you are familiar with Christianity in general, and even if you’re like me (an Agnostic that likes fart jokes), you’ll find something you will enjoy out of watching the film. Intellectual or otherwise.
Religion and Jay and Silent Bob. Who’da thunk it?
